Description

The IPS Choral Recording Workshop is a single day of choral and similar recording techniques. We have based the workshop in St Paul's Church, Wimbledon, south-west London, in order to provide us with a real world location with a bit of 'acoustic'. The trainers will be Mike Hatch and Hugh Robjohns.

IPS members might not be familiar with Mike, but they will almost definitely have heard his work. Mike is a graduate of Surrey University's Tonmeister course, and a founding partner of Floating Earth, which is an independent recording and production company based in West London. Mike has specialised firstly in classical recording, and more recently in huge and live broadcasting events (Peter Grimes on the beach in Aldeburgh etc....). He has well over a thousand recording projects under his belt, and when we contacted him to ask if he would do this course he was recording classical music above a car showroom in Morocco!!!

Hugh Robjohns is of course the technical writer and journalist, and ex editor of Line Up magazine. He is a highly sought after speaker and lecturer, writes for many magazines and journals, and is Technical Editor of Sound On Sound.

The day will consist of both knowledge sessions and practical sessions, and there will be a small choir to record in the morning, and a larger choir in the afternoon, plus the piano.

It is planned that all attendees on the course will eventually receive a set of the recorded files, in order to be able to 'make your own' mix after the event. Places are limited as we want as many people attending to be able to spend time in the sweet spot, so book asap to avoid disappointment.

This is a 'full service' event, and so morning and afternoon refreshments, and a delicious soup and posh sandwich lunch, are provided for you at the venue.

Provisional schedule:

0915 - 0930 Attendee arrivals, registration.

0930 - 1100 Talk. Basic acoustics, monitoring, etc.

1100 - 1130 AM refreshments.

1130 - 1300 Record small choir (perhaps 10 - 12 voices).

1300 - 1400 Lunch (Attendees, tutors, staff, small choir)

1400 - 1530 Talk/practical rigging for large choir, hanging, H&S.

1530 - 1600 PM refreshments.

1600 - 1730 Record large choir (perhaps 40 - 60 voices).

The organisers (the Institute of Professional Sound and or IPS Trading Limited) may find, for many reasons, that it is nessessary to change or amend the intended schedule and or facilities or even, without liability, cancel the course with a full refund. Any known changes or amendments will be published on this site, and where or when possible registered attendees will be notified by email.
